Giglio 2006
A fine ottobre si è svolto il primo concorso fotografico isola del giglio, naturalmente non potendo mancare, ho inviato le mie foto speranzoso di potermi ben affermare dal momento che era per me la prima volta da partecipante nella categoria fotografi affermati.
Purtroppo non posso darvi l'esito della mia performance in quanto hanno reso noto per ora solo i nominativi dei vincitori, quello che posso fare comunque è farvi vedere le immagini che avevo inviato.

At the end of October there was the first photographic competition Giglio Island, since I couldn’t miss it of course, I sent my pictures hoping to classify well, given that it was my first time as participant in the Established Photographers category.
Unfortunately I’m not able to give you the result of my performance, since only the winners’ names have been notified, what I can do is to show anyway the images that I sent for it.

Un giorno al Giglio
Per concludere in bellezza la settimana che mi aveva visto partecipe alla spedizione a Pianosa, sfidando le ire di mia moglie e mio figlio, il sabato nemmeno rientro a casa poichè l'indomani riparto per l'Isola del Giglio.
In compagnia di Paolo, Antonio, Francesco salpiamo da Porto S.Stefano diretti a Capel Rosso, nell'estremità meridionale, dove troveremo una parete che scende intorno ai 55 mt. ricca di gorgonie e nel blu facilmente avvistabile tanto pesce. All'altezza dell'Argentarola, il mare si mostra più nervoso, un leggero ma tirato libeccio stà montando le onde, un attimo di esitazione per consultarci tra di noi e decidere se proseguire oppure rinunciare.... ovvio, la voglia di immergerci prevale e quindi sfidando gli spruzzi d'acqua che prendiamo sul viso, raggiungiamo il luogo prefissato.
La piccola insenatura ridossata era già occupata da un gommone di altri subacquei che fortunatamente stavano già concludendo la loro immersione, in attesa di prenderne il posto preparo la mia attrezzatura fotografica deciso a mettere il fish-eye per fare un pò di foto ambiente. L'acqua è abbastanza limpida, la parete scende ripida fino intorno ai 25 mt. senza offrirmi particolari spunti fotografici, poi all'improvviso si riempie di gorgonie la cui grandezza supera spesso il metro, perdo subito contatto con i miei compagni, per un fotografo è normale che sia così, e inizio a sparare i miei flash. Tra uno scatto ed un altro arrivo fino a 42 mt. e qui ritrovo i miei compagni che già stavano risalendo, mi unisco a loro in quanto paolo mi fà cenno di risalire, successivamente mi dirà che non era di risalita, ma di guardare nel blu poichè c'erano 4 Barracuda in caccia.
Non mi importa, tra Ventotene e Pianosa di pesci ne ho visti a sfare, oggi il mio intento era quello di fare foto ambientate e con l'ottica che avevo montato non avrei potuto ottenere niente di buono.
Il rientro è tranquillo, il mare lo abbiamo di poppa, un trancio di pizza al volo a S.Stefano e di corsa a casa, sono tre giorni che manco, mia moglie e mio figlio mi aspettano.

One day at Giglio isle
To end brilliantly the week that I was part of the expedition in Pianosa, challenging the grudge of my wife and my son, on Saturday I don’t even go back home since the day after I leave again for Giglio island.
With Paolo, Antonio and Francesco we sail from Porto S.Stefano heading to Capel Rosso, in the southern side, where we’ll find a wall going down around 55mt rich in Sea-fans and in the blue we can easy see plenty of fish.
At the height of Argentarola, the sea is more agitated, a light but tight south-west wind is mounting the waves, a second of esitation to decide if going on or renouce…..obviously the wish to dive wins and therefore challenging the sprinkles of water we get in our faces, we reach the spot we wanted.
The small sheltered inlet was already occupied with a rubber dinghy of other divers which luckly were already ending their immersion, waiting to take their place I prepare my foto equipment, willing to put on my fish-eye to take some ambient pictures. Water is quite clear, the wall goes down steep up about 25mt without offering particular hints for pictures, but then suddenly it’s full of Sea-fans often bigger than one mt., I soon loose contact with my comrades, normal thing for a photographer, and I start to shoot my flashes. One shot after the other I reach 42mt and here I find back my friends already coming up again, I go with them since Paolo signals me to go back up, later he’ll tell me that he was not noticing me to go up but to watch in the blue, since there were 4 Barracudas hunting.
It doesn’t matter, between Ventotene and Pianosa I saw plenty of fishes, today my goal was to take ambient-pictures and with the optics put on I couln’t have obtain nothing good.
Coming back is calm, sea it’s aft, a fast bite of pizza in S.Stefano and rushing back home.
It’s three days I’m missing , my wife and my son are waiting for me.

Finalmente arriva l'autorizzazione a fare una spedizione all'isola di pianosa, da parte dell' Ente Parco Marino dell'Arcipelago Toscano, questo grazie alla richiesta inoltrata dall'Università degli Studi di Siena, settore biologia, per campionare e rilevare il fondale di quest'isola che per fortuna rimane off-limits al turismo, alla pesca, ed a qualunque altra attività.
La mia presenza serve per documentare fotograficamente come la flora e la fauna marina si biodiversifica rispetto ad ambienti che sono e rimangono accessibili e quindi soggetti a qualsiasi tipo di inquinamento.
La spedizione era composta da studiosi, che grazie all'ausilio di subacquei i quali prelevavano campioni di sedimento, catalogavano e immagazzinavano tutti i dati raccolti per poi studiarli e confrontarli con quelli già posseduti, appena tornati in laboratorio e novità, un fotografo, io, per realizzare un archivio con immagini ad alta risoluzione dei fondali dell'isola.
Le immersioni, assolutamente non impegnative si svolgevano per la maggior parte sui 15-20 mt., il fondale si presenta così, degrada lentamente in sterminati prati di poseidonia, ma la sensazione di essere uno dei pochi esseri umani che è sceso sott'acqua in questo luogo, mi faceva sentire un esploratore, i pesci, all'inizio impauriti dalla nostra presenza erano schivi, ma dopo pochi attimi, incuriositi da forse qualcosa che non avevano mai visto, si avvicinavano e ti guardavano come a pensare quale strano animale fossimo.
Credo che in due giorni di immersioni di aver visto il 70% delle specie ittiche del mediterraneo, Cernie, Dentici, Corvine, Ricciole, Saraghi di tutti i tipi, Barracuda, io no, ma hanno avvistato anche un'Aquila di mare e la vegetazione talmente verde e rigogliosa nascondeva quà e là Pinne Nobilis, Spugne e Spirografi.
Ci è mancato di avvistare i Delfini, che normalmente troviamo in viaggi di questo tipo, ma al ritorno vedere il sole che tramonta sulle alture della Corsica con Montecristo che gli fà da contorno è ugualmente indimenticabile.

Pianosa 2006
Finally the authorization for an expedition on the Pianosa Island arrives from the Marine Park Body of the Archipelago of Tuscany,thanks to the request by the University of Siena, Biology Department, to sample and to analyze the seabed of this island that luckly is off-limits to tourism, fishing and any other activity.
My presence is there to certify with my pictures as the marine flora and fauna biodiversifies compared to places that are and remain open to visitors instead and therefore vulnerable to aevery kind of pollution.
The expedition was composed by scientists who, thanks to the help of divers taking samples of sediment, were listing and stocking all datas aquired to later study them and comparing them with the ones already got before, as soon as back to the lab and, new thing, a photographer, me, in order to make an archives with high definition images of the seabeds of the island.
Immersions, absolutely not difficult, were for the majority at 15-20mt, the seabed is slowly degrading in huge meadows of Poseidonias, but the awareness of being one of the few humans who has ever gone underwater in this place, made me fell an explorer, fishes, scared by our presence at first, were shy, but after few seconds, maybe curious of something never seen before, were coming closer and were looking at us as wondering which strange animal we could be.
I believe I saw, in two days of immmersion, 70% of the marine species of the Mediterraneum, Groupers, Dentexes, Ravers, Hedgehogs, White breams of all kinds, Barracudas, not me, but also a Sea eagle was seen and vegetation, so green and flowering, was hiding, here and there, Pinnas, Sponges and Spyrographs.
We only missed to see Dolphins, which we normally see in this kind of trips, but on the way back seeing the sun setting on the hights of Corsica with Montecristo around it is equally unforgettable.

Antibes 2006
Alla prima apparizione nel concorso di Antibes, forse il più importante al mondo, dove ogni fotografo è giudicato su una singola fotografia per ogni categoria, con la cratena che depone le uova mi sono classificato 97° exequo con il grappolo di uova di gattuccio, mi sono classificato 54° exequo.

My first time at the Antibes competition, maybe the most important in the world, where each photographer is judged on a single picture for each category, I classified 97th exequo with the Cratena laying her eggs, and 54th exequo with the cluster of the Lesser spotted Dogfish eggs.
